Product Description
Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Advanced Onsite Sensor (AOS) Absolute Scale Digital Caliper, 0 to 6"/0 to 150mm Measuring Range, 0.0005"/0.01mm Resolution, LCD
The Mitutoyo 500-196-30 digital caliper has a 0 to 6" (0 to 150mm) measuring range with 0.0005" (0.01mm) increments for precision and an advanced onsite sensor (AOS) electromagnetic inductive sensor for resistance to dirt, oil, and water. Its digital readout LCD shows inch or metric units for versatility, and allows either absolute or incremental measurement readings. The electronic caliper measures inside, outside, depth, and step values for versatility and includes a protective case and SR44 silver oxide battery. Digital calipers are measuring instruments commonly used for inspection in manufacturing to provide the precise measurements of an object. A pair of jaws attached to a long beam with a marked scale is used to take inside, outside, and step measurements. An additional depth probe slides along the beam to take depth measurements. One jaw is fixed to the end of the scale, while the other jaw slides along it with gearless precision to take measurements. The reading is electronically generated and displayed on a digital, high-resolution screen as a single value. Digital calipers can take differential measurements, which are used to determine the difference in measurements between two objects, by zeroing the display at any point along the scale. Some digital calipers can switch between standard and metric units, and some can output readings to a computer or printer for recording measurements. Compared to dial calipers, digital calipers provide measurements that are faster, easier, and more error-free, but they are more fragile mechanically and electronically, and do not resist coolant well. Vernier calipers are more durable than digital calipers because they do not have internal moving parts, but they can be more difficult to read. Digital calipers are commonly used in fields such as metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, carpentry, and medicine. Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and related systems. The company, founded in Tokyo in 1934, formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963 with headquarters in Aurora, IL. What's in the Box? Electronic caliper SR44 battery Protective case

Features
Mitutoyo's absolute Digimatic Caliper is the next generation of electronic calipers. It keeps track of its origin point once set. Whenever turned on, the large LCD displays the actual slider position ready to start measurement. No more repeated zero setting is necessary with the absolute encoder technology, as well as no more concern for over speed errors.
- Large and clear LCD readout.
- The Zero/ABS key allows the display to be Zero-Set at any slider position along the scale for incremental comparison measurements. This switch will also allow return to the absolute (ABS) coordinate and display of the true position from the origin point (usually jaws-closed point).
- Data Hold Unit (959143) is optional.
- Carbide-tipped jaw type calipers are also available.
- With thumb roller. Except 500-500-10, 500-501-10,500-502-10.
- Supplied in fitted plastic case. Except 1000mm / 40” supplied in wooden case.

But I digress. The genuine Mitutoyo instruments are outstanding. Like many outstanding products (think Gucci, Rolex, etc.), Mitutoyo attracts imitators. There is a remarkable variety of counterfeits and outright fakes - some of 'reasonable' accuracy (but for how long?) – and some junk. Just Google the subject and see how easy it is to tell if you have purchased the genuine article - or a copy. Here are just a few of the ways I was certain I had received the "real McCoy":
1. Price: Real ones go for $120+. Fakes can be found in abundance on eBay for $39.99. Now the details.
2. Outer box is the 'right' color of orange (somewhat lighter, and not 'red-orange').
3. Diagonal stripes in upper LH corner of outer box are deep charcoal gray (not black).
4. Plastic case is well made and, clearly appearing in raised letters on the underside, is marked "Made in Japan." Counterfeits make no claim regarding their origin (guess) in this location.
5. Opening the box, the neatly arranged documentation is unmarked, flat / uncrushed by the little interior plastic 'hold-down' bars that keep the caliper in place when the case is closed. Not so with fakes, which typically come with wrinkled / crushed documentation.
6. Look at "Certificate of Inspection" - and in particular the "Serial Number." Is it crisply rendered, like all the other type, in the very same font, and in perfect register centered in the little 'box' where it appears? Counterfeits typically have this SN added later - and it is often somewhat fuzzy + not centered / different font.
7. Battery Card: Mine came with 'Mitutoyo' stamped on the card, with a realistic expiration date on the back, and 'SR44SW' + 'Japan' on the battery itself. YMMV with counterfeits.
8. When you insert the battery into its compartment, does the display come up with a string of flashing dashes, which go away and display '0.0000' only when you press the "Origin" button? Fakes often come up with zeros immediately – no flashing dashes first.
9. Origin button: does its top sit proud of the casing surface? Counterfeits often have this button almost 'recessed.'
10. Back out the lockdown screw on top of the bar. Is it captive? Fakes are usually not, and will fall right out into your hand if you unscrew them.
11. Look at the fixed bar in the area just under the "0" on the engraved scale. Is the cutout there (on this fixed portion of the blade) fully 'radiused' – or is it at a more abrupt right angle with little curvature? Fakes often exhibit that shape (this can be a somewhat subtle 'tell').
12. Turn the caliper over after rolling the thumbwheel out to 1.5" or so and look at the "channel" in the fixed bar. Is it perfectly milled out, with a well-defined semi-circle at the LH end? Counterfeits typically have a "ramped" and squared off appearance at the end of this channel.
13. Look at the end of the 'depth' bar. Smoothly circular radius, and short tip? Reproductions often show a rather longish tip.
14. Operation. Rolling the thumbwheel feels butter smooth. Fakes often have a 'gritty' feel.
These are just a few of the ways to spot a non-genuine pair of calipers. Not saying the reproductions cannot be fairly accurate (but again, for how long – and how repeatable are the measurements), and you may indeed feel you got your money's worth (at under $40). But when the price seems "too good to be true," it almost invariably is too good to be genuine.
Bottom line: if you care about such things, know that in this case Amazon is offering the real thing – and that it is of very high quality.
I have had this caliper for over 7 years.
I appreciate craftsmanship and critical thinking attention to details of tools and equipment - I call it an engineer's art work. When it comes to tools, in general, I have a "buy once cry once" mentality. Unless, there is a sense of urgency, I usually put tools in my "Tools" list, till I see the price go down to my target, which is when I pull the trigger.
I worked with a few Mitutoyo equipment in grad school and at work. I always loved their craftsmanship and sturdiness. As a hobbyist and an engineer, I use this caliper to do a lot of different measurements. I needed something, which was not made in cheap China and was consistent with high level of precision, so I decided to cry once for a precision caliper.
Pros:
1. It is very well made precision device. The attention to details on this caliper is pure class and worth spending 5 to 10 times more than the Chinese devices. When I first bought it, I had a staring competition every few days, just to see its craftsmanship and what new I would observe on the device that I appreciated.
2. Came with a calibration certificate, and it matches to actual calibration measurement tools I have at work, to test it. it has not lost the calibration after 7 years of consistent usage.
3. Easy to read display and the actual scale.
4. High quality material.
5. Long battery life. I am yet to replace the original battery that it came with.
Actually nothing I am saying above is out of the ordinary for a Mitutoyo, it is expected.
Cons:
1. Let's get it out, PRICE. It was just over one bill when I purchased. But to me it was worth it.
2. Box - while it is sturdy and well made, I wish it would have come with a cubby to place the calibration certificate. The certificate falls down almost every time I open the box. I know I am nitpicking here.
Conclusion:
Buy once and cry once, for you will not regret it. Just don't tell your significant other how much was it worth, especially if he/she is not in technical field, for an engineer's art sometime is often unappreciated.
never had an issue with this brand, it has served me well for many years. Always dependable and the price was right..
